Three Movements for Clarinet and Piano
Monday, April 6, 2015
(2015) This work was written for the Rivers School Conservatory of Music with a small commission on behalf of Dan Loschen and Karen Heninger in January of 2015. The main constraints were hand size for the pianist, and technical abilities (high notes, speed, rapid tonguing, etc) for the Clarinet player. With these in mind I set out to write a work that was in a language not too far out for a younger musician- yet had an intensity that they could grab onto. The three movements share genetic melodic material, and utilized various pitch limitation games in the creative process. The listener might identify some common gestures, and trans-sectional development. The Clarinet lines are rather long, and may be rather challenging for a younger musician, therefore, it is important to breathe at the ends of phrases in a way that is musical. The Clarinet is the star, and the piano is a powerhouse of sonic reinforcement. The influences are a mish-mash of Bartok, Ligeti, Prokofiev, Messiaen, Debussy, some minimalism, and some slightly French lounge music.
